Anglo-Egypt army that fought Mahdism in the Sudan, at first on its own but later with the aid of British troops, was formed after the Arabi revolt of 1881-1882.  The previous army was Turco-Egyptian force in which the British had no say; the new conscripted army was at first limited to 6000 men with 25 British officers but was later increased to over 18,000 men with 140 white officers.  
    18 Battalions infantry Each battalion:  six companies each 100 men
      6 numbered 9 to 14 were Sudanese blacks: each 4 British officers.
    Egyptian (aka "Fellah") Battalion 1 to 4 and 15 to 18:  British Officers: 3 per fellah.
5 to 8 had native officers.
